Day One is one of the best-known journal apps around, and for good reason. It syncs across iPhone, Mac, Android, Windows and the web, encrypts that sync end to end, and can print your journal as a real book.
People still go looking for an alternative, usually for one of three reasons:
- The free plan works on one device and allows one photo per entry.
- Lifting those limits means a yearly subscription (Silver or Gold).
- Sync needs a Day One account.
If any of those is why you’re here, this comparison is for you.

When Day One is the better pick
- You write on a computer as much as on your phone. Sync across Windows and the web is a real strength. Ownmost is a phone and tablet app, and syncs directly between your own devices when they’re near each other.
- You want a printed, bound book delivered. Day One can print and ship one. Ownmost makes the PDF; the printing is up to you.
- You need it on iPhone or Mac today. Ownmost’s iOS version isn’t out yet.
When Ownmost is the better pick
You’d rather not subscribe. Ownmost is free for your first 30 entries. After that, one purchase of Full Access removes the limit for good — nothing renews every year. Lock, backup, sync, photo filters and the Footprints map are free from the start.
You don’t want an account. There’s nothing to sign up for; you install it and write. Entries live on your device, and since there are no servers for your entries, we can’t see them. They only leave your phone if you turn on backup (to your own iCloud or Google Drive) or syncing with your own nearby device. To be complete: the app does send usage statistics and crash reports to Google Firebase. That’s on by default, you can switch it off in Settings, and it never includes anything you wrote.
You like more than one photo per day. Even on the free tier, you can add several photos to an entry.
You want your month as a book you can keep. Ownmost turns a month (or everything) into an A4 PDF with a cover and a contents page for each month. You preview both layouts — By date or By photo — with your own entries before saving. Here’s how to make one.
Moving over
There’s no importer from Day One. The simplest path is to export your Day One journal as PDF or text and keep that as your archive, then start fresh in Ownmost from today.
If you want to see how Ownmost feels before installing anything, you can try it in your browser — it comes with a month of sample entries.
